In December 2020 Samen Meten Meierijstad (Measure Together Meierijstad) started. Half a year later they have more than 115 PM sensor kits up and running. A nice example of bottom-up citizen science popping up in the Netherlands .
Measure Together Meierijstad
Meierijstad is a municipality located in a rural area in Brabant. The aim of the Measure Together Meierijstad initiative is to measure particulate matter in residential areas and to contribute to raising awareness about everybody’s responsibility to reduce particulate matter as much as possible.
No direct involvement RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu)
Contrary to what the name suggests, there is no direct involvement between Measure Together of the RIVM and Samen Meten Meierijstad. It is a beautiful example of a Citizen Science Network founded by citizens, supported by local government, that makes use of the Measure Together infrastructure without needing any further support from RIVM. The information on samenmeten.nl and the access to the database suffice.
Sensor.Community method
In six months, Samen Meten Meierijstad has installed more than 100 PM sensor boxes. The members of the working group build the sensor kits themselves and provide technical support. They use the Sensor.Community method.
